The color Carmine or cochineal

 

refers to a pigment which is extracted from the cochineal. It is clear from various historical sources, that people were already aware of this substance in the time of the Incas and Aztecs. The Spanish Conquistador Cortes brought the substance around 1520 to Europe. The substance with its deep red colour is used in cosmetics, watercolour and oil paintings.
